Are you ready for some... Nachos?

Let's build them!
Base layer chips. Then top with mix of Jack and cheddar, diced
tomato, white onion, Cilantro and finish with with shredded beef
And, more Cheese, please!
Repeat!
Into a 400 degree oven until you can smell the Tortilla chips!
Like this!
Top with my fabulous Guacamole and a little sour cream...
And, hope next year the Cowboys
will be playing in the Superbowl!

Game-day Nacho prep!

See that? No... Not pretty Mrs. Cardinal... I'm talking
about Sunshine, and the new buds on my climbing rose!
(click photo once to enlarge)
Spring excites me! But today, it's Superbowl Sunday nacho time, which
means I need to get busy and reheat the Drip Beef I made yesterday
Before I put the left overs in the refrigerator last night, I strained
the cooking liquid and removed all the fat solids. Today, it's, Au Jus
I've been dying to try this Merlot sauce!
There are still plenty of Cupcakes left, but I'm thinking brownies tonight!
The game's still a few hours off but since I have 45-minutes
to kill before the Brownies are done, I may as well prep now
Cheddar always loved Jack!
So today, they shall be Married on top of nacho mountain!
Look! Our sweet Ghirardelli turtle brownies are done!
As is my prep! Truly classic
Mise en place, wouldn't you say?
Time to go Play in the sunshine for a while... See you at game-time!

Drip Beef Sandwiches

Earlier today I put The Pioneer Woman's Drip Beef recipe into the oven...
Then, I went shopping for six hours. Now we're home and it's Dinnertime!
Smells amazing! Once again, the old, Low & Slow
method has produced Perfectly fork-tender results
Really fork-tender!
Temp - 275 degrees. Time - 6 hours
Let's Shred!
Wow-wee! That's a lot of Shred!
There will be plenty left over for my Superbowl nachos tomorrow!
My raccoon family will sure be Happy that
I extracted all the icky Fatty pieces, huh?
My Boeuf-F-F's all done!
Time to Toast our rolls!
Let's see if I can do this without forgetting them!
Now for Cheese... Muenster for me, Provolone for you!
Look! I did not Burn the rolls this time!
You know what they say...
Build it and they will come!
Which explains why he keeps Sneaking into the
kitchen to steal Bites of beef from the platter!
So far, so good!
Done! And, that's how you Drip beef!
Good Stuff!

Let's Drip Beef!

When I saw this recipe on The Pioneer Woman's website last week I knew
it would be the way I would start my Saturday. You see, while I do plan to
serve her Drip Beef sandwiches for dinner tonight, the Leftover beef
will become the star of my famous nachos for Superbowl Sunday!
And, the left over beef from my nachos will make my little Raccoon
family very happy! So let's get this Beefy-party started, shall we?
I do have one of those Dutch ovens Pioneer Woman uses, but I use it
to bake my No-knead bread, so I just can't bring myself to dirty it up! No, for
missions like this one, only my German stainless covered roaster will do
Boeuf! It's my Boeuf-f-f! Sorry... But
it's what I hear when people say, BFF
Onions and butter smell So good!
In goes the Soy sauce
And the Splash of cooking Sherry
And, garlic. Yes, the recipe calls for only Three cloves. But having lived
just outside the Garlic capitol of the world for almost two decades, I know
it's the Garlic that tells you how much to use. I yield to its wisdom. Always!
Thyme is my Herb of choice here!
Smells ah-Mazing!
Four cups of Water, and...
That's all there is to it, Campers!
Hum... I have Shopping to catch up on so I don't know about leaving this alone
on the stove for Six hours. I better opt for the oven version of this instead
Now I feel better... Low and Slow is the way to Go!
See ya in six hours for Drip Beef sandwiches!

Snow-day Cupcakes and a find...

On our way to Atlanta last week we learned of a flight delay that required
us to Waste some time. So we made a few shopping stops. On our
second stop I found this at an antique shop in South Carolina
I saw this side first, and instantly recognized
my Oma's church! Discover it Here
I can't count the number of Masses we attended
together at the beautiful Dom Kirche too!
It's not every day a girl Born and raised in Augsburg
Germany finds a treasure like this in South Carolina!
Before I get to my Baking this evening I have to show you this!
Most people at work yesterday spoke about Stopping at
the Grocery on the way home for bread and milk ahead of the
snow storm. Not me. I rushed over to Costco for chuck roast to
ensure I could duplicate the Pioneer Woman's Drip Beef!
Enough of that... It's time to bake him some Cupcakes! And then, I'm going
to throw together chicken Caesar salads for dinner that taste like summer!
It was a Snow-day here, so you had to know
the edible Snowflakes would come out to play!
Oh, and the Icy-blue sanding sugar too!
So good!
Perfect!
A perfect Treat on this snowy night!
Have a Cupcake!

Wet, heavy Snow

Poor Cousin It!
(click any photo once to enlarge)
Global warming my Foot!
I mean, Really! It's almost too much for a girl to
take. Here, let me close my eyes and Envision...
Happier Times!
He keeps telling me everything will come
back... That the plants are just sleeping
To me, this isn't Sleeping... Any C-average
doctor would tell you this is a full-on Coma!
Despite the season, it appears Someone has
been adding Pretty things to my garden
My lovely Arbor looks so cold. Seems so far away from
when the lush, Radiant yellow climbing rose will cover her
completely and hide sweet Birds to nest there in spring
Much too far away!
Birdbath Snow-pancake anyone?

At least the trees are Smiling through it!
It's raining now and things are getting Icy all over!
Come over... I have some Snow for you!
And, some Frozen mushrooms too!
Poor garden Sprite looks so cold today...
Brrrrrr, she Tells me!
Don't worry little Sprite, spring's coming!
We just have to Believe!
Looks like I won't be crossing my Creek today!
The wind has really Kicked up with the freezing rain so
branches are beginning to come Down out of the trees now
That's some wet, Heavy snow!
This is my favorite Japanese maple. Even in the snow, he's on fire!
Geez, it's really, really Cold out here!
Okay. I'm cold and Wet now so it's time to get back
inside, Fire up the oven and bake something!

It's a real Snow day!

Of all the Snow events we've experienced here, I
have to say this is by far the most Beautiful!
We've had three Snows since the week before Christmas...
And I've loved them all!
Huh, little Squirrel?
Everybody is happy we Filled the bird feeders last night!
My snow is beginning to Plink now...
Which means we've Transitioned to ice...
Ut-oh!

A special Thank-You is in Order today!

A really Great day!

Couldn't wait to get to Fort Benning this morning to pick up
our Brandon at the Ranger compound behind the brown fence
Brandon couldn't wait to show his grandpa
all the modifications he's made to the GTI
And his Grandpa... The Captain, couldn't
wait to inspect the PFC Ranger's barracks!
Something about these boots wasn't
quite up to the Captain's inspection!
Our first stop was the Atlanta Cyclorama. Dad said they
can now Check this off their bucket list! It was checked off
my bucket list the First time we visited it a few months ago!
After the Cyclorama we headed over to Stone Mountain. I enjoy the park
at Stone Mountain and was happy to have Brandon and Heather with us!
Up, up and Away we go!
Ah-mazing!
Snow Mountain looks pretty cool too!
Here they are at the Top!
I love Covered Bridges!
And geese!
Brandon asked Heather to go on the bridge with him. She
said no because she doesn't like Old wooden bridges
But Brandon wasn't taking No for an answer...
And, that's how Heather ended up on the old covered bridge!
After our nature walk at Stone Mountain Park it was time for
dinner. Ever since we discovered The Village Corner German
restaurant and Bakery at Stone Mountain village we've made it our
stop for lunch or dinner at least once during every trip to see Brandon
This time, the Captain and his Ranger-grandson enjoyed a German beer together
This was indeed a really Great day!

I've got Good news and bad news...

You know how people always want to know if you want to hear the Good news first or the bad news first? Well, I'm one of those girls that always asks to hear Good news first because once the bad news is delivered, I know I won't be able to think of anything else. Therefore, I line up for those five seconds of Happiness before bad news whenever I can.

So I've got news... And, it's not so much good News versus bad news as much as it is Fantastic news versus really, really, horrible news. And yes, for those of you that need me to get to the point, my news very much has to do with the Army-mom part of who I am and that whole, Proud but terrified way I feel about being my Ranger's mom.

Before I deliver the really, really horrible news I'll tell you the Fantastic news, which is that by this time tomorrow, I will be just hours away from seeing my parents!

I can't even think about the Moment I get to see their faces again without becoming emotional. Part of it is that I just really miss my mom and dad. Perhaps it's just this cold, Dim time of year and/or the circumstances that brings us together again... Or maybe it's that I just watched my boss lose a Parent two weeks ago. Whatever the reason this is closer to the surface for me than it usually is, I'm finding that the further away in years I get from living just six houses down from them in our happy little California neighborhood, the more unhappy and less Tolerant of the situation I'm becoming.

More and more I'm realizing that Life is too short to live 3,318 miles away by choice.

But that's a whole other, semi-truck-load of Feelings for another day... Because today, there's only so much analysis of my life, and the Decision we made to relocate I can handle.

So my Fantastic news is that I get to see my mom and dad tomorrow. I. Cannot. Wait.

I haven't seen my parents at home since last February, (see here and here and here) and the last time we were all together as a family was last April, (here) for Brandon's graduation from Army basic training.

A lot has happened... Since we were all together in April, and while my dad was still Recovering from one surgery, (here) it was discovered that he would also need Heart bypass surgery. Although I wanted very much to be with them, it was my dad's Wish that I not see him that way. Therefore, I haven't seen my dad since that most Miserable experience of waiting for life and death news while being stuck on the Opposite side of the country from them. I've been waiting far too long to look into my dad's eyes again to reassure my Heart that he's really okay. On top of that, I cannot wait to feel my mom. I need to squeeze her in Gratitude for everything she's done to heal my father this past year and for everything that tiny, Yoga-loving, powerhouse of a 68-year-young woman continues to do for him and our Whole family.

I know.

I'm stalling.

My really Horrible news goes like this...

Tomorrow, after the Thrilling moment when we will collect my parents from the Atlanta airport, we will all continue on to Fort Benning together to say good-bye to our Ranger before his deployment. Then on Sunday, I will have to say good-bye again to my parents.

I told you it was really Horrible news.

Nevertheless, I am determined to make the most of this Visit with my parents and with our Brandon, and his Alabama-sweetheart too!

This is it. All the fretting about the possibility of his being deployed since he left College to join the Army, while our country is at war, has turned into this Reality that he must now go.

I know my Ranger will come back home. Period.

I just have to develop a strategy for Dealing with the times when I am tortured by the fear of never seeing him again. It's usually at night and in the dark, after I've slowed down long enough to hear myself think. It's enough to make a Grown woman afraid of the dark! And, to a lesser degree, I need to figure out how to function for Five months without being absolutely sure he is Safe since we won't, (can't) hear from him.

Before you say it... Yes. Through it all, I respect what my Son is doing. And I do feel an overwhelming sense of Pride that my boy is part of a very special group that Stepped up when it counted.

Nevertheless, while my son is a Warrior, his mom remains a worrier.

For Monica...

Thanks for your sweet Comment... If you loved those
bunny soaps on ropes I picked up yesterday, then I'll show
you this one too... It's a Rubber Ducky soap on a rope!
I bought up all they had at Home Goods last spring and have been
giving them away to Friends with little kids all year. Sadly, this is
the last one I have left  - And, he's headed into my Shower today!
I found these at Home Goods yesterday too. I'm always on the look-out
for Girlie birthday or Hostess gifts, and these fit the bill perfectly! Not
only is the packaging Beautiful, which means I can just slip them into
a Gift bag with a piece or two of tissue paper to wrap, the Green
Tea scent is just heaven! In this box we have bath salts...
And this is green tea Liquid soap. Perfect
next to the kitchen or Guest bathroom sink!

A little Retail therapy...

After the week I had, my Plan was to stay in bed all day watching old movies
with my Bingee. But then at noon I remembered there was an Estate auction
in King that we wanted to check out so we started there... Then we went to Costco
and Home Goods where I found these cute little Soaps on ropes. You know what
a sucker I am for soap on a rope... And these Frog princes were a must have!
Marshall's was our next stop where I found these Beautiful cake plates. I cannot tell
you how ready for Spring I am... I miss my trees and Flowers so much I can barely
stand it. I woke up this morning Thinking about wandering around our favorite
Garden shop in bright sunlight picking out all sorts of Lovelies to fill the
planters out on the deck. Of course, these are not my usual first waking
thoughts, however, since I woke up to someone Watching his gardening
shows I guess I owe, or can blame it on P. Allan Smith! Any way,
speaking of Spring... I found a little spring at Marshall's today!
Flowers, butterflies and Lady bugs. Lady bugs... Oh, my!
There were three different Designs so I
bought two of each to Build my own set!
I love them all! They are delicate and Pretty, and I can't wait to
bake something Light and spring-like just to use them!
Oh, and next to the Butterflies, lady bugs, flowers and feelings of spring these
plates inspire...The Best part is the price and the fact that they're Lenox too!
I also cleaned up on Spanish saffron today!
My new Spring plates deserve to have me bake a
zesty Lemon cake so I picked up this loaf pan too!
Speaking of baking... I felt bad about ruining the Blueberry crumble
muffins I attempted to make him last week so on the way home
I picked up a muffin mix. It won't be the same as my from-
scratch blueberry Crumble muffins, but if you won't tell...
Neither will I!
Shhhh...
Time for a Costco-throw-together dinner! They were demo'ing fresh
(not frozen) chicken Pot stickers there today, and they smelled great! I say
smelled great instead of tasted great because the kid demo'ing them was too
busy chatting up the young girl leaned up against the Cooler door next to him
to actually have any ready to taste. When I inquired about his pot Stickers, he
told us that since he Forgot to turn on his electric Skillet, it would, be a while...
At least he was able to tell me where to Find them!
And let me tell you... They taste as Good as they smelled cooking at Costco!
Now that his Muffins are done I can have my dinner!
Yup! They look like, from-Scratch to me!

Oh, Martha!

Ever since Thanksgiving, when my December issue of Martha Stewart's
Living magazine arrived and I first saw her 1950's Evergleam Pom-Pom
aluminum tree, I've been searching for one of my Very own! Turns out,
they're not that easy to find. Knowing Martha, she probably ordered
reinstatement of Production at the Aluminum Specialty Company in
Manitowoc, Wisconsin, which stopped producing them in 1969...
Fortunately, for those of us with Less influence, there's e-Bay!
I have exactly ten months to amass a Collection of pink mercury
glass ornaments like Martha has to complete my vision of owning
a tree just like hers... And that's exactly what I'm going to do!
However, I must say these sweet little Teal numbers I
picked up last weekend in the gift shop at Callaway Gardens
look great on my aluminum Tree, and they make me smile...
Speaking of sweet things that make me Smile... I give you this...
This...
And this!

72 hours later...

Not to worry. I'm still here.

Not ready to open up about our trip to visit our Ranger last weekend. Still feels like I had an out-of-body experience Listening to some of the things he had to tell us... Just hoping I said enough to let him know how deeply I love him, Support him and how eager I am just to have him back.

We'll be together again next week. It will be a difficult Visit but nothing and no one could stop me from seeing my boy off to war. I've seen him off before, and I'm pretty good at it. Let's see... There was Kindergarten, middle school, then high school and in 2006, a University away from home. Seeing him off got a lot tougher last year though. First there was Army enlistment, then hugs and tearful good-bye's for basic training, Airborne and Ranger schools.

War will be different, and I'm the first to admit that I am Not ready. Nevertheless, there's no denying that our reunions have always been very Sweet, so I have the calendar marked now for our next sweet reunion in Five months. That's all the Army gets though - five months. Then I want him back. This is a loan. You hear that, 3rd Ranger Battalion? A l-o-a-n!

By the way... The house is SPOTLESS! I find it's the one thing I am able to do well to pass hours and hours without Thinking at all.

I attempted to Bake after work yesterday but it was a disaster. Baking requires concentration and I have none. I hope the raccoon family enjoyed the $12 blueberry crumble batter I had to dump out in the yard for them, because instead of .5 cups of water, I added 1.5 cups of water to the recipe. Fortunately, dinner could be produced only through the use of my microwave, so at least we didn't go hungry tonight.

I'll find my way through this. It probably won't be easy. Or cheap... I was a huge ball of raw nerves on the way back from Ft. Benning Sunday so when Dallas gave up, it was all I needed to send me over the edge. Thankfully, the Dallas loss came just moments before Exit 90 in Gaffney where the Pottery Barn outlet lives. I did some serious Damage there that provided at least a half hour's distraction.

That's all for now.

Thanks for checking in on me!

Call of Duty... Not the Video game

It's been a rough week... The Ranger's been training in Virginia since the 6th so a second birthday came and went without him at Home and without even a phone call. Then his dad broke news to me that the leave Brandon spoke of at Thanksgiving - where he would come home Before he deployed - might not happen at all if for any reason they Deployed early. Oh, and without notice too! This was 411 his dad said he recently received from Brandon, who told him he wasn't sure how to prepare me for this Possibility on his own...

Of course, I heard what was said but I decided to Ignore it. First of all, I know the Army and there isn't much the Army does quickly. Mine has always been a, hurry-up-and-wait Army experience. And second, there were heart-shaped cookies to bake and nothing Distracts me from worrisome thoughts like baking. Well, except for shopping, that is. Besides, the Army and I had a deal. Brandon missed coming home for Christmas so the battalion that just came back might have leave for Christmas - and in exchange, Brandon would have two weeks home in March, (possibly even on his Birthday!) before his scheduled deployment.

And then the call came Early this morning... The call that said Rangers aren't part of the, hurry-up-and-wait Army I'm used to. The call we were warned might come during his Ranger class graduation briefing when the Commander warned to expect our boys to move further, Faster and to fight harder without being able to tell us much. Least of all what we want to hear most, such as the, what, where, When, how and why of it all. The call that said you can't know where I'm going, when I'm going, why I'm going, what I'll be doing, have any contact with me or send me any Care packages, mom. The call that ultimately said, Get to Ft. Benning to see me as soon as you can

While I listened to Brandon speak, I heard cool calm in his voice. The only Excitement expressed was excitement about his mission. The way Brandon delivered his News helped bring down the pounding coming from my chest I feared he might be able to hear through the phone. Our Ranger said he's ready. Ready to go and ready to come back.

As I pack for our Trip tonight I realize I'm ready too. Ready for him to Come back to me before I even have to let him go.

Happy Birthday...

To me!

Never too early for Hearts!

I had Dough in the refrigerator just begging to be baked. And, I
just couldn't wait to break out the Heart shaped cookie cutters...
However, someone reminded that it's Way too early for Valentine's cookies!
But that's okay because maybe I just want to make Heart-shaped cookies to
celebrate My birthday. Or, how much I love him. Hey! It could happen!
I love this Trick! Rolling my cookie dough between two pieces of parchment
paper eliminates the need to use any Flour at all. We all know that adding
too much flour to our dough can make our cookies Tough and dry
So this is the Only way I roll!
Because as you already know... I'm a Big fan of perfect!
And this is how it happens to Happen for me!
Not only doesn't the dough stick to the Parchment or my
rolling pin - Being able to Slide my hand underneath to lift
my cookie shapes free keeps them Perfectly perfect too!
And off to the Freezer we go! Freezing before baking helps dough
rise a bit Higher and prevents the cookie shapes from spreading
After 10-minutes in the Freezer, bake at 350 for 17 minutes or until just
slightly Golden around the edges. Now that our Hearts are on their way...
It's time to get cracking on the Royal icing! Small batch of cookies
this time... So it's just a pound of Powdered sugar. Four tablespoons
of Meringue powder, 1 teaspoon cream of tarter and six tablespoons
of warm water. Oh! And a 1/2 teaspoon of extract to enhance the taste!
And, off we go!
Watching it come together!
I've recently learned to Stop beating my royal icing to death. Now, I
turn Off the mixer the moment it begins to shine. Like this...
Perfect royal icing every time now!
We have a Game to catch in Raleigh tonight so
this is going to be an Easy, 1-color design!
Red!
What were you thinking... Blue?
No blue... Just red Hot hearts!
Not bad for a First-time heart drawing effort,
huh? Especially for one in such a Hurry!
I just might have to send some, or a few of these to
the Ranger and his Alabama-sweetheart because...
While it's true that it's a bit too early
to call these Valentine's Day cookies...
It's never too early to send Heart-shaped
cookies to those you Miss and love!

His auction Finds...

This is one of his auction-Finds I didn't mind bringing home...
For soon there will be a sweet Cherub high atop my barn!
We argued on the way Home about whether or not it is bigger than
the Weather vane we already have in the foyer. So we made a bet...
Which I lost... He was right, the Cherub is much bigger!

New Year auction Finds!

Attended the first auction of the New Year at Great State Auction company
They're a really neat, Fun group of people and we are always entertained!
This collection of more than 350-pieces of Granite and enamelware
was a life-long collection of one woman's estate. See that lot
collection of white Enamelware there under the table?
It was a must have for This piece because I loved the shape!
By the time the lot-box of white Enamelware made it up to the block this cutie
was added to it. It's an old enamelware Percolator so the top is glass. I
knew it would look great here in my kitchen cabinet amongst my Jadite
Look at all the Pieces to this old coffee pot!
These are the other three Pots in that box-lot of white enamelware...
However, since I don't much care for them, I probably won't Keep them
Although this one Speaks to me just a little... Must be the green!
This was part of a box-lot of Wooden rolling pins I was after...
The glass is in Perfect condition! It also appears never to have been
used or opened. It contains Baking Powder. Since it's from the
30's, I doubt I'll be using the baking powder - but the Pin is cute!
I had no choice but to take this Graniteware roaster home with
me since all the white Enamelware pots and the green percolator
was sitting it it. I won't be Roasting anything in it. But...
I might use it as a Serving tray to take drinks out to the pool. Or... I
could see planting it up with Herbs to keep next to the grill on the deck
At the end of the auction everyone still at the gallery was Invited to
grab three of the remaining Items they wanted put up for bids. I
grabbed this sweet little Soap dish left from the coffee pot estate
It's stamped, Germany so it was a must-have!
Especially since it's the perfect size for Piggy to sit next to my sink!
I'd been watching this Copper box all day but didn't know what it
was, besides a Copper box in Fantastic condition. Turns out, it's an
antique copper Boiler used in canning years ago. The auctioneer said
larger copper boilers were used in laundry cleaning. Who knew?
Initially I thought I'd bust out the copper Polish, but after
I got it home and had a chance to think about it, I've
decided this old Patina adds something to it!
This was the second item I grabbed in the you-Pick-three...
I've seen similar Salt boxes in worse condition at antique
shops priced $60! I was high bidder on this one for only $15!
This is the last of my Auction finds and I'm so glad I was
high bidder on it. It's the perfect replacement for that Ugly
patriot lamp he brought into our Den a few months ago
There is also a copper Cherub weather vane we picked up; however,
I'll have to show that to you another day... It's way too cold out in the
garage to take a Photo of it today. And besides, Dallas is about to play!

Birthday goodies for Me!

It's still a bit early, but I couldn't resist picking
up a few, To-me, From-me birthday gifts yesterday
Because darn that Williams-Sonoma, they put
out the new Spring colors right after Christmas!
And boy... I'm a real sucker for new Spring anything!
Although the spring goodies had my Full attention, I spent a fair amount
of time browsing the Clearance tables too - Where I found this...
Isn't it great? I see it decorated as a Christmas candle
or perhaps as a Birthday candle set atop a special cake!
The possibilities are Endless!
The real reason for my visit to Williams-Sonoma yesterday,
(as if I need one) was to buy up whatever Peppermint Bark they had
left. You see, one of my favorite people in the whole world Loves
this stuff! So when I heard that the Monterey store was already
sold out, I sprang into action! On the agenda for tomorrow
morning is to mail Peppermint bark and Snow-globe cookies!

Thursday, December 31, 2009

I wish you a Very...

Snow-globes... Done just Under the wire!

We've got Snow-globe cookies to decorate and there isn't a minute to waste!
Because it's New Year's Eve and I said I would
accomplish this cute Cookie project this year!
Look at that! Red, White and Blue! Just another detail
about these snow-globe cookies for this Army Mom to love!
In the magazine, how-to they don't outline first. I do because I like
to stick with what I know. And, outlining before Flooding is what I know!
After piping my outlines I always add what is left over
in the Pastry bag back into the icing I thin down to flood
I flood like this!
Because when I follow Bridget's
decorating Tips, it always works!
This is just like Glittering craft paper!
Except sanding sugar Tastes much better!
Not that I've tasted much Glitter! Or glue. Just for the
record, I wasn't one of the paste eaters in Kindergarten
Look at that!
I wanted to experiment with writing on top of the Red
sugar... So I thought of a Number. Can you guess what it is?
You're so smart! I dressed up our 2010 with a bit of fine sanding
sugar so now it looks like there is a little Electricity behind it! Who
needs Times Square and that glittery ball they drop any way?
Now for our Snow mountain outline...
After I flood-iced the mountain I poured Nonpareils over the wet icing
Looks like Snow covered mountains in snow-globes to me!
What about you?
Now to outline and flood our Globe sky...
After you flood your globe Sky, add your snow-globe
decorations. I am using these little Santa sugar figures
that came with my cookie Cutter set because I couldn't find
the Gingerbread people shown in the magazine... Darn!
A few Hearts and some snowflakes should do it!
And to finish, fine Sanding sugar!
I don't know about you, but this fine Sugar just isn't
giving me the chunky Crystal look I was hoping for...
Wait! I have some White crystal sugar I bought in Georgia the last time
we visited our Army Ranger at Ft. Benning - Let's see how that looks!
Yup! This crystal sugar is Much better!
These sugar Snowmen that came as part of my snow-Globe cookie
cutter set are cute, but they're much too big for my Snow-globes. You
can bet I'll be on the Look-out for some of those gingerbread people
like the ones Dani Fiori used on her snow-globe cookies for Martha!
Monica thought my buying these tiny cookie Easels was pretty
funny... But they work! So now my snow-globe Cookies are done!
Just under the Wire of 2009 too!
I love them all!
But I must admit that I do have a Favorite today...
And, it's This one!

Last cookies of the Year!

They came out of the Oven looking so perfect,
there's almost no reason to Decorate them!
Still, we decorate Snow-globes like Dani Fiori
did on the Martha Stewart show tomorrow!

Finally... Snow-globe Cookies!

What you see here is the beginning of my Last cookie project of the year!
And it's just too Cute for words!
(click any photo once to enlarge)
The moment I got the December issue of Martha Stewart
Living, I vowed to create these snow-globe cookies.. Then I got
busy with Thanksgiving and forgot all about them!
Then, Martha featured a, How-to segment on them during one of her
cookie-week shows the week before Christmas and I ordered This
Then I got busy with Christmas and forgot about them again!
Thankfully, I'm back on track now. Because I will not allow my year
to end without having some of these Snow-globe cookies to show you!

Linguine with Clams

Obviously, this is not Linguine. Nor is it
clams... What this is though is dessert! Courtesy of
our dear, dear friends over at Whole Foods!
These are my little chatty Clams - Night
two! Soon to be his Linguine with clams...
First we need to prepare our Linguine... I boil mine for four minutes
under the package directions since the Pasta will continue to cook a
little in the white wine and Garlic sauce I use to cook the clams
Speaking of clams... They're still mocking me from
over there on the plate, which I find Fascinating!
By the way, I'm baking some Cookies this week! It's a design
featured during one of Martha's cookie-week shows just
before Christmas. Here's a little hint for you... Can you guess?
Back to our Clams... After the butter Melts into
the olive oil, I add a small bottle of Chardonnay
And then, the Clams!
I'm pretty sure this is Not where the
phrase, Happy as a Clam comes from!
Although I admit they do kinda Look like they're smiling...
He just came into the Kitchen and said this looks
more like Screaming to him. I stand corrected!
After the clams scream or Smile, depending on your point of view on such
matters, it's time to add the slightly underdone Pasta to the clam broth. To that,
add a pinch of coarse kosher Salt and a few turns of the Pepper grinder
And broccoli, because that was his Request of me this evening
Add the clams back into the pan to Warm them through, and then...
Plate it!
Finished with a squeeze of Lemon and some freshly grated parmesan
You guessed it... Clams night two and I'm sticking with my chicken!
Tonight it's garlic-Basil chicken...
Because I prefer not to be Mocked by my dinner!

Cioppino and Chatty clams!

Let's make some Cioppino!
Tiger prawns, Scallops and little neck clams!
I call this my $100 dish. Why? Because between the $20 Cioppino soup base from
Williams-Sonoma and the roughly $60-80.00 in Seafood it requires, it's about $100
by the time I get it to the table. Still... He loves it so whatever it costs, it's Worth it!
Someone told me a little white Wine might make my cioppino even Better than
the last time I made it. I wouldn't know because I don't drink. It's not a religious
or AA thing... I just never developed an Appreciation for wine or any other kind
of alcohol. Truth is, as soon as I was legal to drink, drinking lost all appeal
I swear these Clams are moving!
And these clams in the Sink are blowing bubbles at me!
No. I haven't been tasting the Wine... These guys are really chatting!
Hush over there!
This is me, ignoring the Chattering clams that are all around me...
Oh, Look! I fixed them... Because no one's Chatting anymore!
This smells amazing, and I don't even care for Cioppino!
I only make it because it's his Favorite dish
And as long as he likes it, I'll be Happy to make it!
But me... I'm sticking with Chicken and pasta...
Because it has Less to say!

Tiger Prawn Nachos... A slight Change of plans!

The only after-Christmas sale he was interested in showing up
early for yesterday was the 50% off sale at LA Reynolds garden
shop. You see, he likes to wait until their after-Christmas, 50% off
sale because he doesn't mind buying Plants that look like this...
And, this afternoon we went back for More! I think they look dead... But
he insists they're just, Sleeping. I'm just going to take his Word for that!
After LA Reynolds we stopped at Brookberry Farm for a walk
All that remains of Bowman Gray's country estate now is his magnificent barn
I love this Barn!
If I could, I would pick it up and take it Home with me!
During our walk he suggested that Instead of making the
cioppino I planned for his dinner, I should just use the Tiger
prawns to make us both some killer-Nachos for the game/dinner
So I told him, I can do that!
Looks like someone Smells seafood!
To make my tiger Prawn nachos we'll need to line a baking
sheet with foil and spread out some Tortilla chips. I like these
bite-size, white corn rounds by Tostitos. They're easy to handle!
Grating some colby/jack cheese using the Large holes on my grater...
And using it to Sprinkle over the tortilla chips
I also grated an equal amount of colby/jack using the Smaller holes
on the grater. This is the cheese I will use to Top the nachos later
Top the first layer of Cheese with diced onion - Now I prefer red onion
but white or Yellow onion will work just as well - I also like to add tomato
and Cilantro to this initial layer too. If you prefer a little Heat on your
nachos this is where you might add some Chopped jalapeno. I'm a weenie
when it comes to Heat so you won't catch me adding jalapenos to any dish
Time to prepare our prawns! First, add a little olive Oil to the pan...
And a tablespoon of Butter too!
After the butter is melted, add your Prawns
Squeeze the juice of half a Lime over them...
And add some Kosher salt
After three-Four minutes, turn the prawns over. Add whatever
lime juice might be left in the lime half, and Top with cilantro
Right here you could decide to splash a little White wine into the
pan and then pour all of this over a huge plate of Fettuccine topped
with grated Parmesan cheese and spritzed with lemon juice - Yum!
But we're on the Nacho-train tonight so half way through cooking on this
side, about two minutes, press 2-3 cloves of Garlic over the prawns
Cook another couple of Minutes and then pour
the cooked Prawns out on top of your nachos
Top with the finely grated Cheese and...
Try not to grab a prawn Before you can get this into the oven!
Bake at 400 degrees for eight minutes or Until the cheese is melty
Top with more Cilantro and more onions
and more diced tomato, if you feel like it
And then... Serve it!
With a dollop of sour cream and some of my Guacamole, please!
Finished off with just a Squeeze of lemon juice too!
There you have it... Week 16, Game-time Tiger prawn nachos, À la me!

Football Cioppino!

While someone and his Fuzzy side-kick snoozed, I was first
through the door at Costco this morning... I needed to exchange
the television Santa brought for our Wii. Seems that his measurements
were way off and our armoire will hold a much, much larger screen. Plus,
my Dallas Cowboys are playing tonight, which means Cioppino for him...
And, my famous monster-Nachos for
lunch with fresh guacamole and salsa!

Christmas 2009

Merry Christmas, Bing-kitty!
Let's go downstairs and start our Christmas...
Turn on all the lights
And, the Festive music too!
And get into the Kitchen because it's
time to begin preparing Christmas dinner!
Now it's time to see what Santa brought us!
Besides our beautiful tree!
I love it...
From every angle! It's not the real Nobel fir tree
we prefer to have but can't because we're not in California
any more. However, as far as artificial Trees go...
It's not half-bad!
Forget the new TV for the Wii...
This proves Santa got my list!

Merry White Christmas!

There is still plenty of Snow on the ground from last week's storm...
Therefore, I'm calling this a White Christmas!
I love it!
And I welcome More of it!
The Nativity at Christmas Eve Mass last night...
We couldn't call it, Midnight mass
this year since Mass began at ten o'clock
We were home by midnight, and found
Bing waiting up for us in the kitchen...
Bing wishes you a Merry Christmas too!

From our Family and Hearts to Yours!

Swapin' Sugar... Delivery Day!

Look what just Arrived in the mail! Yes, just now at 6PM... Very late for
our sweet mail-lady who apologized for the weather she said has managed
to keep her way behind her schedule today. Nevertheless, what you're looking
at is the package dear blogger, Monica sent for our mutual Cookie exchange!
Why did I ask him to bring my mail up to our bedroom to open? Because
it's a whole lot Warmer up here under my featherbed - the kitchen
is Freezing right now! So since I cannot wait to open the box
until the house warms up, you'll just have to indulge
me these bedroom dresser shots. Look at all
this cuteness... It's a cookie-filled suit case!
Which makes Perfect sense! How else would cookies
travel in style from Texas to North Carolina? Oh, my!
These cookies are Beautiful and completely intact!
(Click photo once to Enlarge)
Dearest Monica - The card you wrote is Touching
and the photo you enclosed will be cherished...
And this Patriotic ornament you included means the world to me! Also, you may
expect me to display the Mixer ornament in my kitchen for the rest of my life!
And last, but surely not least... Your Cookies are simply the BEST I have
ever tasted! Thank you, Monica. I'll be your sugar-Swap buddy ANYtime

Snow Trekking!

He said, Let's go for a walk in our snow! So I pulled
the Ducks out of the closet and out into the snow we went!
Good-bye cozy, Warm house!
We live in the country on what they call, Secondary roads...
Which means you're home until the snow melts unless
you have a 4-wheel drive. Which we do, but we're
still happy to stay home until the Snow melts!
I love the Creek behind our house. I love it in all seasons but especially
In the Winter when it snows!
I wouldn't Drink from our creek
but I love all the critters that do
I'll just stick to watching it Flow and
enjoying how it changes with the seasons
Time to wander the Garden and trek out into our forest
It's a Snow-pie!
Yes. I love our creek!
Ha! Looks like the water bottle I left on the
table the last time we sat by the Fire is on ice!
There's only one way into our forest
from the back yard and that Bridge is it!
Made it!
The plan is to build a Garden house over here...
I'm all for putting this beautiful piece of Property to good use!
Nothing huge... Just a cute little Folly to hang out in
and watch the Seasons change!
And the critters play! Looks like someone cracked
a Nut just before settling into their den for a nap!
Our raccoon family lives under this tree in the creek
See that little Smudge of dirt there in the snow on
the left? That's where they go in and Pop out in
the evening for the Snacks I put out for them
Okay. I'm cold...
Time to go back in the house now... Bing
promised to keep my spot Warm for me!

Morning after...

Woke up this morning to even More snow!
Everything is fresh and Clean...
And, Cold!

Snow day turns to Snow night!

This stands between us and the Hot tub...
This wins!
Because a hot bath instead will do just fine
I love it!
From all sides!

My snow day!

I took the day off from work to finish my Christmas packages...
My snowflake Cookies are dry and decorated, which means I can
finally finish all the Christmas gift boxes I have been waiting to mail!
I ordered Snow for later on this morning... You could say I'm
encouraging the atmosphere with my Snowflake cookies
Which means it's sure to snow now!
This is the last of the packages!
And, as if on cue... It's Snowing!
It is... It's really Snowing!
I love Snow! Especially snow just before Christmas!
Looks like he filled the Feeders this morning just in time!
Birds in snow - Fantastic!
We're off to the Post office now with all my Christmas
packages and it looks like it's going to be a fun drive!
You stay here Cousin It... and when I get
back I want to see a lot more snow!
I want to see your branches Bent down under the weight of snow!
Joy for Snow is what I feel!
Ut-oh! Maybe he was right about the Roads getting worse!
Okay... We've made it back home in one piece! And,
what do we see on Cousin It? More Snow! Just as I asked...
My crab-pot Trees look wonderful in the snow too!
Everything looks amazing in this Beautiful snow...
Now you see it...
Now you don't!
Ah-mazing!
Show off!
The wind has picked up and it's Cold!
Brrrrr... That's what my Koi are probably saying in there!
I believe we already have the three Inches predicted
And it's Still snowing!
No... No one's complaining here!
The more it snows the Happier I get!
Because there's plenty of food in the
pantry and the Generator works just fine!
So let it Snow!
Since I've delivered the party cookies I have nowhere to be tomorrow!
We're not in Monterey any more!
The top of the Solarium is covered now
Look at the Deck... It sure will be a chilly walk to the hot tub later!
All the birds are tucked into their nests now
It's so Peaceful out here... I love living out in the country!
Just us and the snow
And all his sleeping gardens
And Cousin It all covered in white lights
Things are just as they should be this evening...
For after Autumn, comes Winter - Yea!

Cookies and Hugh Grant night!

Before I left for work this Morning I wrapped
up my Christmas tree cookies to prepare
them for their trip to Texas tomorrow!
And after work today I got Busy on the birthday favor cookies
It's going to Snow here tomorrow so I thought I better
not delay and wait to the last minute to Finish them - lest I be
unable to deliver them in time for the party on Saturday!
I saved one of the sample cookies I made last week
just to ensure I could duplicate the Success I had. Because
you know me, when it counts, success is pretty much a Fluke!
But not this time... The icing tinting Fairy was kind to me today!
Very kind!
I took a break from my cookie Decorating-fest tonight to attend an advanced
showing of the new Hugh Grant movie, Did you hear about the Morgans?
It was Wonderful! But you should probably not take my word for it
and go see the Film yourself. I'm one of those Hugh Grant fans that could
pretty much watch him stand on his head and be Utterly thrilled
At the end of the Viewing we were offered posters. I requested 16
so if you need one, let me know! I'm using this one in the kitchen
to keep me motivated to decorate Cookies past midnight
Because without Hugh Grant, well, this
just wouldn't get done tonight!
All that's left to do now is Wrap the party cookies. Gillian's colors
are Pink, purple and pearly green. Since I couldn't incorporate
the green into the design of the cookie, I've done it with the ribbon!
When my friend said she would send me the Guest list so I would
have the Names to put on the cookies, all I could think
was that I hoped there were no really Long names!
No Nathaniel, Constantine or Wilberforce, please... Much to
my delight, Jackson and Graham were the the worst of the list. Now
I cannot wait to Deliver these to the party-girl tomorrow afternoon!

Swapin' Sugar

When my Favorite blogger-friend, Monica suggested a cookie
swap I jumped at it. Have you seen Monica's Blog? Go Here now
and you'll understand exactly why I jumped to swap Cookies with her!
Monica is fabulous so she deserves Fabulous cookies, which
means only Bridget's cookies will do for our swap! I keep
testing other sugar cookie Recipes people tell me I simply
must try, but honestly, so far, Nothing beats Bridget's recipe
for cookies that taste great and Hold their shape while baking!
Having said all of that I have to tell you about This Sugar Cookie
recipe... Now it spread way more than I would have liked - even after I put
the cut cookies into the Freezer for 10 minutes before I baked them. So I won't be
using it for Gillian's cookies I'm baking this Friday - However, when I put the scrap
piece I baked to taste in my mouth, for a moment I was transported back in time
to when I was Seven years old, baking and decorating sugar cookies for the
first time with my Oma for our Christmas. This recipe tastes Exactly
like those wonderful cookies I had almost forgotten forever!
It may have something to do with the fact that Amanda's cookie recipe
requires Twice the amount of sugar and four times the eggs of Bridget's recipe...
Whatever it is, these Cookies are just plain yummy! And tomorrow, after
they are all dry, I'll bag them up and send both kinds to Monica. And to
the Ranger and of course, several will end up in Monterey too!
Because leaving them here could be Dangerous!
Oh my! It's getting Late so I'm afraid my snowflakes
will have to wait for Decoration until tomorrow evening
As long as I get the packages out by Friday everyone will be happy
And happy at Christmas is a good thing!

Birthday party Cookie favors

Let's make Gillian's party cookies!

It's not often I get the Opportunity to bake for little girls!
So you can bet that when I'm asked, I make the Most of it!
I hope she likes Cupcake cookies!
And icing...
I promised to create Two designs to choose from but
the more I work with them, these Cupcakes are
beginning to turn into my favorites!
Of course, these cookies aren't for me so I'll try
not to let what I prefer influence the decision...
Pink and Lavender are her party colors - Which
just happen to be my two Favorite colors too!
I hope she likes these Pearly sprinkles!
If not, perhaps these non-Pareils will make her smile
Or perhaps it'll be a Combination of the two!
I'm sure her Mom will let me know...
So, Erin... Now that you've seen them, what do you think? I know
Gillian's third party color is a soft, pearly Green so if you agree, then
what I'll do is swap the pink Ribbon on the bags for a green one!

Rainy, cold Sunday breakfast

It's cold but not cold enough for Snow... So it's just a
yucky, rainy Sunday morning. A pancake kind of Sunday!
A lady at work had a Tastefully Simple party
so I ordered a few things I thought sounded good
I love anything Raspberry so when I saw raspberry pancakes
and sauce it didn't take a lot of arm Twisting to get me to order
They sure Smell good!
Which is always a good sign...
Now that I have the temperature on my Griddle
figured out it's getting easier to create Perfect pancakes
Like these...
Finished off with a drizz of Raspberry sauce...
And it's breakfast time! Now, if it would
only Snow this would be a perfect morning!

Auction Fun!

We took our monthly trip to Wilksboro this afternoon to attend the
holiday auction put on by the Great State Auction company. I saw this
sweet vintage Roaster featured in their on-line Listing and decided it would
be coming home with me. Unfortunately, we arrived late and it had already
been Auctioned off. Fortunately, the lady that was high Bidder was still
present in the gallery and had it placed under her Seat for me to find
So I popped over to ask her how much she had to Bid to win it
She said she gave $10.00 for it and a red one similar to it as a set - Damn!
So I told her to name her Price for the green one and paid it. I've
never seen one in such Terrific condition and usually when I
find them they are always Missing the roasting rack. I love
how it looks on my Counter and how it compliments
my collection of Jadite in the cabinet above it!
I hadn't seen this set in the photo Catalog before we arrived
but when it came up I had to bid on it. It's Pink and perfect!
It's much Older than I am and for only $15.00, why not?
This was the Main reason I wanted to attend today's auction!
Ever since I first saw knife boxes sitting on the buffets in the
dining rooms at James Monroe's Ash Lawn-Highland estate,
year, I've been looking for one of my own. And today... I have one!
It carries my good Silverware perfectly!
There was one woman that gave me a nice Run for my money
but this was one Bidding war she wasn't going to win!
Unfortunately I either need to find a bigger Buffet for the
dining room now or find someone that wants a Pewter tea set!

Made room for One more!

Hey, Bing! The UPS guy is at the
door. Wanna come see what we got?
No? Okay... Then, you stay here and keep our Spot warm!
So Macy*s finally came through with one of Martha's beautiful
twelve-inch Square cake stands that didn't come out of the
shipping carton chipped. And now my set is Finally complete!
Also, from Sur la Table we have the copper Cupcake
cookie cutter and the Pastry bags I ordered. And, this...
Yes... Another cake stand!
A lemon, a Bee and half-price! All three qualify
as Great reasons to add this piece to my collection
The only problem is that I am running out of space in my baking
supplies cabinet. I may have to Clear out another one soon...
Because I'm sure to find another Cake
stand I can't live without any minute now!
